One of the many things the covid-19 lockdown taught me is how to do my own nails. With everyone having to stay at home, it sometimes became hard to find things to pass the time. DIY projects became one of my favourite past times. One of these DIYs introduced me to the world of press-on nails. I don’t think I can ever go back to acrylics or gels. My nails are very sensitive when it comes to the whole curating process, so glue and stick tabs have been a life, or nail saver. I no longer have to endure the pain that comes with going to a salon and having my nails done. I can simply do it at home. After experimenting with different press on nails, here are a few ways I learned how to make my press on nails last longer than a few days or hours..
Number one on my list is prep, prep, prep. It’s amazing how simply prepping your nails correctly can impact the lifespan of your nails. But what do I mean when I say prep?
- Start off by cleansing your natural nails. Use a gentle nail polish remover to eliminate any oils, dirt, or residue from previous nail products. This will create a clean base for better adhesion.
- Shape and Buff: Trim and shape your natural nails to your desired length and shape. Gently buff the nail surface to remove any ridges or unevenness. This helps the press-on nails adhere more smoothly and prevents premature lifting.
- Push Back Cuticles: Use a cuticle pusher or an orangewood stick to gently push back your cuticles. This creates a clear space for the press-on nails to adhere properly without lifting.
- Gentle Filing: Lightly file the surface of your natural nails using a fine-grit nail file. This helps to create a slightly rough texture, allowing the adhesive to adhere more effectively.
- Clean and Dry: Before applying the press-on nails, make sure your nails are completely dry. Use an alcohol pad to clean your nails and remove any excess moisture. Moisture can interfere with the adhesive and lead to premature lifting.
Do not underestimate the power of prepping. It sets the stage for a secure and long-lasting manicure, allowing you to enjoy beautiful nails for an extended period.
The second thing to look out for is the quality of the press-on nails you’re using. The materials and adhesive used in the press-on nails play a crucial role in their durability. Look for press-on nails made from quality materials such as acrylic, gel, or polygel. These materials are known for their strength, flexibility, and resistance to chipping or cracking. Avoid nails made from cheap or flimsy materials such as plastic. These are more prone to breakage and look extremely fake when applied.
Choose press-on nails that match the shape and size of your natural nails. Ill-fitting nails can lead to discomfort and increase the risk of premature lifting. Look for brands that offer a wide range of sizes and shapes to find the perfect fit. The best range is one that offers 14 sizes and more.
The final tip is to be sure you are applying the nails properly. Know how long you want to keep them on. For a look that lasts a few days, use the adhesive tabs, otherwise use a nail glue. When applying your press on nails, place them at 45-degree angles to your nails, then press them down for no less than 30 seconds.
These are the tips that have worked for me. Experiment with different brands and techniques to find what works best for you. Enjoy beautiful nails that last and embrace the versatility and ease of press-on manicures. If you don’t know where to start, why don’t you look at some of the ones I’m selling in my store? Good luck with your press on nails journey. I hope you learn to love and appreciate them the way I do.
